As Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) providers, it's crucial to understand the evolving landscape of healthcare transportation and the role of rideshare companies like Uber Health and Lyft Healthcare. While these services have made inroads into the healthcare transportation sector, NEMT providers should view this development as an opportunity for growth and innovation rather than a threat.
Uber Health and Lyft Healthcare have indeed entered the healthcare transportation arena, offering convenient and often cost-effective solutions for patients needing rides to medical appointments. However, it's important to recognize that these services primarily cater to a specific segment of patients with basic transportation needs.
NEMT providers possess several competitive advantages that set them apart from rideshare companies:
To maintain and enhance their competitive edge, NEMT providers should embrace technological advancements:
Rather than viewing rideshare companies as direct competitors, NEMT providers should explore opportunities for collaboration:
The NEMT industry is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7% through 2028. indicating a bright future for providers. This growth is driven by an aging population, increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, and a growing recognition of transportation's role in healthcare outcomes.
While rideshare companies have entered the healthcare transportation space, NEMT providers should not fear this development. By focusing on their unique strengths, embracing technological advancements, and exploring collaborative opportunities, NEMT providers can continue to play a crucial role in ensuring access to healthcare for all patients, regardless of their mobility or medical needs.
The future of healthcare transportation lies in a diverse ecosystem where NEMT providers and rideshare companies coexist, each serving distinct patient populations and needs. By adapting to this changing landscape and continually innovating, NEMT providers can secure their position as essential partners in the healthcare journey.

The landscape of healthcare transportation is evolving rapidly, with rideshare giants Uber Health and Lyft Healthcare entering a space traditionally dominated by Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) providers. This shift presents both opportunities and challenges for passengers, healthcare providers, and transportation companies alike.
Uber Health and Lyft Healthcare have made significant inroads into the healthcare transportation sector, offering convenient and often cost-effective solutions for passengers needing rides to medical appointments. These services leverage their existing technology platforms to provide on-demand transportation, potentially reducing wait times and improving access to care.
NEMT Providers:
Rideshare Services:
NEMT services often come at a higher cost due to specialized equipment and trained personnel. However, these costs are frequently covered by Medicaid or private insurance for eligible passengers. Rideshare options generally offer lower-cost rides but may not always be covered by insurance.
NEMT providers are essential for riders with mobility limitations or those requiring assistance during transport. Rideshare services are better suited for ambulatory passengers with basic transportation needs.
The introduction of rideshare services into healthcare transportation has the potential to significantly improve access to care. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that the use of rideshare services for medical transportation resulted in a 7% reduction in missed appointments.
While rideshare companies offer valuable options for addressing transportation insecurity, traditional NEMT providers continue to play a crucial role in serving passengers with complex needs. The future likely lies in a collaborative approach, where both sectors work together to offer a comprehensive range of transportation solutions.
As the U.S. population ages and chronic disease prevalence increases, the demand for reliable healthcare transportation is expected to grow. The NEMT industry is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7% through 2028.
The entry of rideshare companies into healthcare transportation presents both challenges and opportunities. While these services offer increased flexibility and potential cost savings, traditional NEMT providers remain essential for passengers with specialized needs. As the industry evolves, a collaborative approach that leverages the strengths of both models will be crucial in ensuring all passengers have access to the care they need.

In the world of Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT), the terminology we use to refer to the individuals we transport carries significant weight. While "patient" has been a default term used regularly, there's a growing movement to adopt a more empowering and respectful alternative: "passenger." This shift in language is not merely semantic; it represents a fundamental change in how we perceive and interact with the people we serve.
Language plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions, attitudes, and interactions within healthcare settings. Dr. Lisa Iezzoni, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, emphasizes this point: "The words we use in healthcare can have profound effects on how patients view themselves and their conditions, as well as how healthcare professionals approach care".1 For NEMT providers transporting these individuals daily throughout our communities, the term "patient" can inadvertently create a sense of dependency and vulnerability, reinforcing the idea that people are defined primarily by their medical conditions or needs.
By adopting the term "passenger," NEMT providers can shift the focus from illness to personhood. This change acknowledges that the individuals we transport are more than just their medical diagnoses. They are people with complex lives, families, interests, and aspirations.
A study published in the Journal of Medical Ethics found that person-first language in healthcare settings led to more positive attitudes among healthcare providers and improved patient outcomes. This research supports the idea that language choices can have tangible effects on the quality of care and patient experience.2
Referring to riders as "passengers" emphasizes their autonomy and ability to make choices about their healthcare and transportation. Dr. Mary Tinetti, Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Yale School of Medicine, notes: "Empowering patients to be active participants in their care is essential for improving health outcomes and quality of life".3
Using the term "passenger" can contribute to a more welcoming and inclusive environment. A survey conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) found that 79% of respondents felt more respected and valued when healthcare providers used person-first language.4 This sense of respect and partnership is crucial in fostering trust between NEMT providers and the individuals they serve.
As the NEMT industry evolves, so too should its language and approach. By adopting a passenger-centric model, providers can create a more empowering, respectful, and inclusive experience for everyone involved.
Dr. Joseph Betancourt, Vice President and Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer at Massachusetts General Hospital, emphasizes the importance of this shift: "Moving towards more inclusive and empowering language in healthcare is not just about being politically correct. It's about recognizing the dignity and humanity of every individual we serve".5
The transition from "patient" to "passenger" in NEMT represents more than a simple change in terminology. It reflects a broader movement towards person-centered care and respect for individual autonomy. By making this shift, NEMT providers can contribute to a more positive and empowering experience for those who rely on their services.
As we move forward, it's crucial to remember that words matter. The language we use shapes our perceptions, interactions, and ultimately, the quality of care we provide. By embracing a passenger-centric approach, NEMT providers can lead the way in creating a more respectful, inclusive, and effective healthcare transportation system.
