Safety comes first: Ensuring passenger safety should be the utmost concern for NEMT drivers. This involves adhering to traffic laws, practicing defensive driving, and guaranteeing passengers' safe boarding and disembarking the vehicles.
Be respectful (and nice): And if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all. Like what Bambi’s bestie, Thumper advises. Seems so easy, but customer service jobs can sometimes be stressful, making some folks burn out and exhaust their niceties on their neighbors instead. And as this is a job that services customers where NEMT drivers are interacting closely with passengers, it’s imperative that they deliver excellent customer service. This entails maintaining a courteous, respectful and attentive attitude to passengers' needs throughout the entire journey.
Keep it clean: Keeping the vehicle clean (detailed even!) and well-maintained (like a clean record on emissions tests — more on this below) contributes to a positive patient passenger experience. Regularly sanitizing high-touch surfaces and ensuring a comfortable and hygienic environment for all on the ride, goes a long way on those customer reviews, too!
Communicate clearly: You don’t need to talk the entire trip, nor tell jokes for laughs (or points for that matter), although humor goes a long way — with those reviews and repeat customers! What we’re saying is that NEMT drivers need to have simple, clear communication with their passengers. Drivers should provide their riders with relevant information about the journey, including estimated arrival times (especially if there’s an unexpected traffic jam) and always ask if any extra assistance is necessary.
Prepare for special needs: Many NEMT passengers often have specific medical needs or mobility limitations. Drivers should be ready to address these requirements, such as aiding passengers with mobility devices or offering medical support as needed.
Don't get distracted: Avoid using mobile devices or engaging in activities that take your attention from the road while driving. It’s illegal and dangerous. And as much as the conversation might be a good one, there’s no need to make eye contact with your passengers in the back. Keep your eyes on the road!
Don't rush passengers: While timeliness is ideal, it's important not to rush passengers as they enter or exit your vehicle. Take the time to ensure passengers are safely boarded and secured before beginning and/or ending the journey.
Don't deflect passengers’ worries: If a passenger voices concerns or discomfort during a journey, take them seriously. Their health and safety may be at risk and that’s not only a liability on you, it’s not giving them the dignity they deserve. Promptly address any issues with care, ensuring the passenger feels heard and valued.
Don't miss that maintenance: Routine vehicle maintenance is imperative to ensure the safety of NEMT operations. Ignoring maintenance check ups and fixes may result in mechanical problems or breakdowns, disrupting service and compromising passenger safety.
Don't stop learning: Ongoing training and education are essential for NEMT drivers to remain informed about best practices and regulations. Make sure not to miss out on training and professional development opportunities to improve skills and knowledge.

So here are several words and phrases we’ve selected in alphabetical order for you to get to know, brush up on and continual study. Refer back to this list as often as you need. Until then, we Bambi believe in you! You’ll be fluent in the NEMT language in no time!
ADA Compliance: Involves adhering to the guidelines that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations. This act requires that transportation services be accessible to individuals with disabilities. As an NEMT provider, you must ensure that your vehicles and services meet these ADA standards. It's all about making sure everyone can hop on board safe and soundly!
Billing and Payment: This involves sending out bills to passengers, insurance companies or government agencies for the NEMT services rendered. It includes checking eligibility, figuring out costs and handling payments from invoice issues to receipt. Booking: This is all about securing transportation for a particular date and time. Bookings can be arranged ahead of time or requested as needed, depending on what the passenger requires.

Fleet: This is a group of vehicles used to provide NEMT services. From ambulances to wheelchair vans, sedans to specialty rides, a fleet might and can have it all! They can also be small and only be a couple of cars in tow (pun intended).
Insurance: There are many insurances that are provided as coverage to protect NEMT business owners, providers, drivers and passengers in case of accidents, injuries or property damage. And it’s important to know that insurance requirements may vary depending on state and local regulations and the type of services offered.
Medical Escort: These folks are the superheroes who tag along during transportation providing that companion care. They’re trained healthcare professionals that may include nurses, paramedics or other qualified personnel.
NEMT: We couldn’t leave out the best four-letter acronym! It’s the back bind — the glue — of the NEMT dictionary after all, right there smack dab in the middle, holding the rest of the words together. Anyway, as you all know by now, non-emergency medical transportation is a service provided to folks unable to utilize traditional modes of transportation such as their own car or public transit due to medical conditions or disabilities. And they do not require emergency medical attention, thus they reason they wouldn’t call an ambulance.
On-Time Performance: This is a time-based measurement so NEMT providers aim for punctuality, making sure their passengers get to their medical appointments and back right on time.
Provider: An organization or individual that offers and/or utilizes NEMT services. Providers may include transportation companies, healthcare facilities or government agencies.
Quality Assurance: These are the formal procedures and protocols put in place to uphold the safety, reliability, and satisfaction of NEMT services. This encompasses regular vehicle maintenance, comprehensive driver training, soliciting customer feedback through surveys and conducting compliance audits.
Ride Request: This is the official ask from a passenger for transportation services. This usually covers details like where the passenger is located, where they're headed and any special medical equipment needs they might have.

Service Area: The region in which a NEMT provider offers its transportation services. Service areas may be limited by state and local regulatory restrictions, available resources or contractual agreements.
Technology Solutions: These are the essential technological tools on the market (like ours!) to optimize NEMT operations, facilitate effective communication and elevate the overall passenger experience. This includes software platforms, mobile applications, and other innovative solutions aimed at streamlining processes and ensuring seamless, swift and sustainable service.
