A business rebuilt around hospitals
Michael Borom came to NEMT from private equity. When he and his partner bought Ambiance about five years ago, roughly 90% of its work came from brokers. They ran the math, dropped the work that could not pay for itself, and rebuilt around hospital discharges, direct health plan contracts, surgery and after-care centers, private pay, and last-mile air medical transport off the tarmac at LAX.
The old tools could not keep up
Hospital work does not run on a fixed clock. Discharges slip, and Ambiance never leaves a patient. Its previous dispatch platform was built for broker appointments, and day-to-day coordination fell back on phone calls, open-source maps and spreadsheets. Schedules were packed too tight to absorb a late pickup.
"Our old system didn't have to do have the ability to do that." Michael Borom
Run Bambi Run juggles the day
Ambiance deploys vehicles across Los Angeles because its hospitals are everywhere. Dispatchers use Run Bambi Run to see which patients are on time, which are slipping, and where to place them without sending a van from Torrance to Mission Hills for nothing. Where a hospital agrees to a pickup window, Run Bambi Run knows the patient can slide inside it.
"We use run Bambi Run to help our dispatchers decide where to put those patients and so we run we use run Bambi Run pretty frequently." Michael Borom
"If you look at how compact that schedule is today, that is way more compact than it used to be." Michael Borom
Fewer empty miles
Optimized routing cut an average of 64.5 unpaid miles a day while keeping paid miles steady. Over 260 working days that is roughly 16,770 fewer miles per vehicle a year. Ambiance estimates daily operational efficiency rose 34%, and with room left in the schedule, vehicles can take new trips as they come in.
"Bambi found cost savings and efficiencies we would never have considered. The scheduling AI recommended adding overtime for one employee that ended up saving us more miles and money." Michael Borom
Hospitals can see their ride
Ambiance gives its best hospital and after-care partners the Bambi facility portal so their staff can see where the vehicle is.
"The hospital wants to know where their vehicle is. So the facility user portal that we use we use it with a bunch of our best paying patient hospitals and our after care centers." Michael Borom
"Our riders are noticing the difference. Shorter wait times, less confusion. Bambi NEMT lets us focus on what really matters, getting people to their appointments safely and on time." Michael Borom
"We just needed something like Bambi to help us get the rest of the way there." Michael Borom
